He taught a class of pedagogical skills at the Leningrad Conservatory. Since 1990 he has been teaching at the Special Music School (College) of the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. S. M. Shalman developed and put into practice an effective methodology for the development of young violinists, which combines a high level of requirements with accessibility for a wide range of students, ensures their rapid progress and stimulates creative enthusiasm. Many of his students have become winners and diploma winners of prestigious international and all-Russian competitions, concert violinists and artists of famous orchestras.
Savely Markovich constantly conducts master classes and lectures in Russia, European countries and the USA, is a member of the jury of Russian and international competitions. Methodological works written by him and articles about his pedagogical activity were published in domestic and foreign journals. He is the editor and compiler of many editions of the pedagogical repertoire. A reflection of the methodology of S. M. Shalman was the school “I will be a violinist” - one of the most popular teaching aids. The main text of the school is accompanied by sections "Advice to parents", "Methodological comments" and "About the violin and violinists". The first of them will introduce the history of the instrument, famous performers, teachers and violin makers. The second section will help make your child's homework more successful. The third section, addressed to educators, contains general guidelines and tips for working on specific skills and individual works. The school was supplemented by the world's first master course consisting of two video series demonstrating S. M. Shalman's methodology. The first of them - "I will be a violinist" (7 films) - illustrates almost all the provisions of the manual. The second series - “I will be a violinist. Concert and Pedagogical Repertoire” (8 films), dedicated to work on works of ancient and romantic music, concerts, virtuoso pieces, etudes and caprices, allows you to hear the play of young violinists brought up according to the proposed method, to trace their development from the age of five to eighteen. Along with this, audio and video recordings of famous violinists of the 20th century are widely used in it.
